NHS Prescriptions

The NHS makes provision for the supply of wigs to people who need them in order to help with medical hair loss as a result of a condition or treatment. MC3 are an approved supplier of wigs for qualifying patients at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Who qualifies?

In order for a patient to receive a wig a prescription for a wig must be made by a specialist clinician. Patients who are not exempt from prescription charges will pay a fee and be able to select from a range of acrylic wigs up to the value of £120.00 (inc. VAT).

Exemptions from NHS prescription charges

You do not have to pay wig prescription charges if you:

  • Are under 16 years old or aged 16 – 18 and in full time education.
  • Have a valid war pension exemption certificate and the wig is for your accepted disablement.
  • Are named on a valid HC2 NHS low income scheme certificate or HC3 certificate for help with health costs.
  • Are included in an award of income support, income-based job seeker’s allowance or income-related employment and support allowance. Claim Universal Credit (and meet the criteria).
  • Are included in an award of pension credit guarantee credit (pension credit on own does not qualify).
  • Are included in a tax credit award and have a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate

Can I get a premium human hair wig?

Patients looking for more expensive premium or designer wigs such as those made from human hair can top up the amount paid for by the NHS Trust. There may be exceptional circumstances where the consultant prescribes a real hair wig on the basis that the patient has a medical condition that excludes them from having an acrylic wig; or they are an existing patient with a prescription for a real hair wig.

What is the process of getting an NHS prescription wig?

  1. The clinician overseeing your treatment on the NHS will sign an Appliance Prescription Form at one of your appointments
  2. The hospital Trust's Appliance Officer will issue an order number to an approved wig supplier (that's us!)
  3. The patient will then attend an appointment with the approved supplier. We run 'wig clinics' at the Norfolk and Norwich every Tuesday. You can select the wig that you like and we will order it to be delivered to you.
  4. You pay the Trust the prescription fee. Any top up above £120.00 for a premium wig is paid directly to us.
  5. If you would like any styling or cap reduction, we can accommodate you in our Salon in central Norwich.
